Saturday, June 23, 7 pm to 8:30 pm – in the sanctuary – Chelsea McBride is the 25-year-old award-winning conductor/composer/ringleader of Chelsea McBride’s Socialist Night School, a 19-piece big band featuring a diverse and multi-generational mix of Toronto’s finest jazz musicians.
Called “a dazzling set anyone with even an interest in big band should check out,” their debut full-length album The Twilight Fall recently received 4 stars in Downbeat Magazine and can be heard here.
With influences ranging from Maria Schneider abroad to Darcy James Argue and Christine Jensen here at home, the Socialist Night School is one of the youngest and most prolific groups playing original contemporary big band music in Canada. They recently received grant funding to support a tour this summer promoting The Twilight Fall.
