Because there is always a need for such things as feminine hygiene products, shampoo and hair conditioner, tooth brushes and paste, the Social Responsibility Committee has a well-marked box on the display table near the front door of our church where people are invited to contribute a loonie or two towards the regular purchase of such basic items.
The women staying at Sandy Merriman House can have breakfast and dinner there and there is a lunch for drop-ins. We’re told by staff that budget restrictions keep the food basic and deadly dull.
In September, seven women at our church began cooking a monthly dinner for the women at this shelter. Our recipes make about 120 servings, so the cook at the house can serve all who are present and freeze the balance for future use. We have four casserole recipes and will be using them until we find which are favoured. Our first dinner was a great success, with several women going back for seconds!
If you would like to contribute to the fund for these dinners, please make your cheque payable to the church, marking on the memo line “For SMH dinners.” You will receive a tax receipt.
