Note: Any person who has reasonable grounds to believe that a minor has been abused or is in need of protection, is legally required to report the matter immediately to the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development. Reporting must be done orally by telephone or in person.
By themselves, none of these signs prove abuse or neglect. But they do tell us something significant is happening in the child’s or youth’s circumstances and they may be having trouble coping. Any of these signs can be the result of situations such as divorce, separation, death of a significant person or the arrival of a new sibling. That’s why indicators must be assessed by professionals. The important thing to know is what the signs are, and how to report them in case a child or youth may need protection.
