Come to a fund raiser picnic after church on Sunday, July 3rd to meet the Syrian refugee families that the church has sponsored. The Refugee Sponsorship Committee will provide barbequed hot dogs (some Halal), salads, beverages and dessert. There will be children’s games and a short sing-along.
Refugee Sponsorship Committee members welcomed Mohammad, Fatemah and Abdulrahman Abo Qayass to Victoria in early October last year. They are the parents and younger brother of Khaled, whom we sponsored with his immediate family in 2018. The new family is comfortably settled in a two-bedroom apartment near the Mayfair Mall. All have been studying English, and Abood (as Abdulrahman is known) is working at Walmart for the summer before resuming his Camosun studies in the fall.
Under the Sponsorship Agreement with the Canadian government, the Church is responsible for supporting the family for their first year in Canada. For 2021 the requirement was $42,000; we had $39,000 in the Refugee Fund at the beginning of the year, with some donations still coming in. Thank you so much to all those who have donated to the Fund over the years!
This past fall the sponsorship project incurred start up costs such as mattresses, other furniture and rugs, and there were winter clothing needs. After an exhaustive search, the apartment we rented costs $1,900 monthly which is more than we anticipated. In order to finish out the Church’s year of sponsorship, another $4,000 is needed.
The Refugee Sponsorship Committee is happy to be able to help these immigrants to Canada. Thank you all again for your support!
