Safety Guidelines

Victoria Unitarian strives to provide the best and most loving kind of ministry possible in our community. We are committed to ensuring the safety and care of our vulnerable members, especially children.

For these reasons, guidelines have been established for our Victoria Unitarians children’s spiritual exploration and learning program, based on recommendations from Screening Handbook by Volunteer Canada (PDF) and our current Victoria Unitarian policies.

All of our employees and volunteers are committed to the safety and well-being of the younger members of our congregation. To this end, we have structures in place for the protection of both children and their adult leaders. Each class has two leaders and there is a window in each door so that activities can be viewed. The Director or a C-SEL team member circulates through the children’s wing during the morning program.

In addition to our general guidelines, each class develops their own covenant or rules for being together.

Parents are responsible for their children, except when the children are in class.

If your child has had a fever, severe cough, diarrhea or vomiting within the past 24 hours, please keep them at home.

Families with young children are asked to change their children’s diapers or take their children to the toilet prior to dropping them off in Wee Care. We ask you to sit near the back of the Sanctuary so that we can contact you if your child is inconsolable.

Tree Notice: The forested area of our grounds are in their natural state which means that the ground is uneven and there are many dead branches that could be dangerous. Children’s groups will stay out of the forested area during or after a windy day, and we ask that you do the same.

Pond Notice: On a seasonal basis, the pond beneath our willow trees contains water. Be sure to supervise your children closely when they are in the vicinity of the pond.
