7 to 8 pm — Composer-pianist Karel Roessingh with spiritual words by Rev. Shana Lynngood. Enjoy jazz with a splash of spiritual inspiration.
This vesper night’s music is based on themes of birdsongs, which Karl collected on a cross-Canada camping trip in the spring of 2016.
The result is a brand new CD entitled Birdsong In The Parkade, which Karl recorded on a Sunday night in August on a Steinway grand piano installed for the occasion in the View Street parkade.
“This is by far the most ambitious and creative project I’ve done, and I’m extremely excited about the outcome,” says Karl. “The sound was magnificent, like a grand cathedral! This is either the most brilliant or most idiotic project I’ve ever done.”
The Sunday night vespers is the release event for the CD Birdsong In The Parkade.
Karel studied jazz arranging and composition at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass., and completed a degree in secondary music and mathematics education at the UVic in 1981. He writes jazz tunes for his own and other groups, and has played with numerous jazz greats. He’s regularly asked to play at jazz festivals as both leader and sideman.
Enjoy jazz with a splash of spiritual inspiration in a venue with exquisite sound and setting. The hour-long evening vesper services are a unique blend of jazz and spirituality. Each service brings together live music from popular local jazz musicians, a brief meaningful message, and a little of the history of the music performed.
