On Rites of Passage and the Cultivation of Eldership —
David Hatfield, Homilist —
Rev. Shana, Respondent —
Ian Warrender, Worship Associate —
A kid throws ever heavier stones into the water, trying to make the biggest splash. An elder, observing, and throwing in stones of their own, recalls their own childhood, enjoys the energies involved, and also notices the ripples that are moving in all directions at once.
When did you become an adult? How? Was it in one indelible moment, or a sequence of seemingly unrelated events over time? Do you even feel like an adult? Does it matter? What price are we paying for not initiating our youth?
In a world that sneers at limits, has more older people yet fewer elders than ever, is moving into deeper overt polarity, reemerging fascism and military conflict, “climate catastrophe” etc…rites of passage are more needed than ever, for all of us, at all life stages!!!
