Social Justice

Sharing our wealth

As part of our commitment to social justice, every month we Share the Plate, splitting the offering we collect 50/50 with a registered Canadian charity. Members suggest the charities, the Share the Plate team approves and schedules them, and provides support for the proposer to implement the appeal.

Truth, Healing & Reconciliation

Truth, Healing and Reconciliation team of Unitarian Universalists (THRUU) in Victoria identifies and facilitates opportunities for education and engagement to contribute to the spirit of reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. This is a joint group between First Unitarian Church of Victoria and Capital Unitarian Universalist Congregation.

We pursue justice and equity through acts of solidarity with people living in poverty, such as our Lifeline Fund and our meal cooking program.

Greater Victoria Acting Together

Greater Victoria Acting Together Core Committee (GVAT) is an alliance of unions, congregations, and environmental, educational, and frontline service organizations working together to tackle some of the toughest issues in Greater Victoria. First Unitarian Church of Victoria is a founding member of GVAT, playing a central role in GVAT’s work on housing, mental health and climate change.

The Refugee Steering Committee sponsors and resettles refugees through the church, cooperates with other sponsorship groups and individuals, and provides expertise, funds, and goods to sponsored individuals and families.

Environment & Climate Action

We pursue environmental justice through our Environment and Climate Action Committee and are involved in One Planet.

International Solidarity

International efforts are focused through two projects, Child Haven International and the Zoie Gardner Overseas Fund.
